May Fayre Bonfire Bake Stall

The town of Lewes is a vibrant community of diverse interests. The town is known for its unique celebrations of ‘Bonfire’, which combine the traditional recounting of the ‘Gunpowder Plot’, as well as memorial acts for the 17 Protestant Martyrs killed in Lewes under the reign of Queen Mary, and those killed in the First and Second World Wars. In addition, there are elements of pagan harvest rituals, as well as the dis-orderly carnivalesque, with outré costumes and grandiose processions. Towards the end of the night, each bonfire society sets off a huge fireworks display. Society members work hard at fundraising for fireworks throughout the year. Southover Bonfire hosts a May Fayre as a major fund-raiser. Essential to the fair – and its fund-raising – is the large bake stall, which I organise.
