May Fayre Bonfire Bake Stall

The town of Lewes is a vibrant community of diverse interests. The town is known for its unique celebrations of ‘Bonfire’, which in Lewes combine the traditional recounting of the ‘Gunpowder Plot’, as well as memorial acts for the 17 Protestant Martyrs killed in Lewes under the reign of Queen Mary, and those killed in the First and Second World Wars. In addition, there are clearly elements of pagan harvest rituals, as well as the dis-orderly carnivalesque, with outré costumes and marches through the streets. Each bonfire society sets off its own fireworks display towards the end of the night and members work hard at fundraising for fireworks all through the year. Southover Bonfire hosts a medieval-themed May Fayre as a major fund-raiser. Essential to the fair – and its fund-raising – is the ‘bake stall’, which I organise.
